UMn. Dept. Orthopaedic Surgery Hand Surgery Fellowship

WELCOME
to the Hand Surgery Fellowship Program

Thank you for your interest in the Hand Surgery Fellowship Program based at the University of Minnesota.

Please download a comprehensive description of the Hand Surgery Fellowship in Acrobat format.

Our Hand Fellowship Program began in 1991 as a collaboration between Dr. James H. House at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Edward C. McElfresh at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Dr. Matthew D. Putnam at Park Nicollet Medical Center and the University of Minnesota. Over the course of time, our Fellowship Program has grown to include additional teaching sites and now encompasses rotations at Regions Hospital, Hennepin County Medical Center, and Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, in addition to ongoing rotations at the original partner institutions of the University of Minnesota Medical Center Fairview,  Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Park Nicollet Medical Center (now housed TRIA Orthopaedic Center).

Faculty who teach within the Hand Surgery Program represent the disciplines of orthopaedic and plastic surgery. A strong microsurgical trauma experience is provided at Regions Hospital. Our pediatric and adult reconstruction experiences are broad and second to none. An orthopaedic oncology exposure occurs at the University.  A diverse and plentiful outpatient practice exists at TRIA and fellows regularly attend clinic and surgery at this location. Our trauma rotation, offered between both Regions Hospital and Hennepin County Medical Center, provides the hand fellow with a solid background in trauma teaching and experience.

Our Hand Fellowship Program has remained highly competitive since its inception. Graduates have gone on to practice hand surgery successfully throughout the United States and, in one case, England.

Thank you for your interest in our Hand Surgery Fellowship Program. The fellowship particpated in the match and used the universal application process (http://www.uihealthcare.com/depts/med/orthopaedicsurgery/residency/handapp.pdf). Two interview dates are offered (one in the winter and one in the spring). Questions should be directed to Ms. Olson, the Fellowship Coordinator at olson073@umn.edu.

Sincerely,
