Resident Advising

  1. Richard Burg, MD; orthopaedic resident. In 2006-7, mentored him through the conduct of his residency research project. This was presented at the year-end Resident Research forum. Dr. Burg is a practicing Spine surgeon in Dallas, Texas.

  1. Walter Truong, MD. IN 2009, mentored him through the submission of two peer-reviewed articles that were presented in a local meeting. This effort produced two-peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Truong is an attending Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at Gillette Hospital, St. Paul, MN.

  1. Benjamin Mueller, MD. In 2010, mentored him through his residency research project. This has resulted in a peer-reviewed publication and presentations in local and regional meetings. Dr Mueller is currently a fellow in Spine Surgery at the Leatherman Spine Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

Medical Student Research Advising

  1. Jeff Westensee MD. In 2008, mentored him through a research project entitled “The incidence of Non-Spine Findings in Lumbar Spine X-rays”. This was presented in an international meeting (AAOS Meeting). Dr Westensee is an emergency medicine resident.

  1. Zikky Kanu MD. In 2010, mentored him through a research project entitled “The incidence of Contraindications to Epidural Injections”. This abstract has been submitted to various meetings and the final manuscript is being written for submission. Zikky is a 4th year medical student.
  1. Mahad Hassan. In 2011, mentored him through a case report entitled” Minimally invasive Smith-Peterson Osteotomy of the Spine: A Case report. We are currently writing the final manuscript for submission. Mahad is a 2nd year medical student.

Postdoctoral Fellow Advising

  1. Charles Ledonio, MD. I served as Dr Ledonio’s senior supervisor during his

postdoctoral research associate training at the University of Minnesota. This has led to collaborations and publications of two peer-reviewed articles. He is currently a Research Associate with the Department of orthopaedics of the University of Minnesota.

  1. Sharon Yson, MD. In 2010, Dr Jonathan Sembrano and I established a Spine

Research Fellowship in the department. I am a co-mentor to Dr. Yson in her position as a Spine Post-doctoral research Associate. Dr. Yson has presented in national meetings and has submitted three manuscripts for publication. I continue to mentor Dr. Yson in the conduct of orthopaedic research with a focus on spinal disorders. She is currently still in the position of postdoctoral research associate.
